What Comprehensive DBT Therapy Includes & Why It Costs More

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a highly structured, evidence-based mental health treatment designed for individuals with complex emotional, behavioral, and safety-related challenges.

At Suffolk DBT, we provide comprehensive DBT therapy to individuals and families across Long Island and New York City, including in-person and telehealth services when clinically appropriate. Many clients ask why DBT therapy costs more than traditional weekly therapy, particularly when comparing it to solo providers or “DBT-informed” services offered throughout Long Island and NYC.

The answer is simple but important: DBT is not a single therapy appointment.

DBT is a comprehensive, team-based treatment program that requires advanced clinician training, ongoing consultation, between-session availability, and long-term commitment from both clients and providers.

The Cost of Mental Health VS The Cost of Education

We expect that the best schools require highly trained faculty, structured programs, supervision, accountability, support staff, and long-term commitment.

We understand that when we pay for college or advanced education, we are not paying for a single class  we are paying for a system designed to help someone grow, succeed, and build a future.

Mental health care, especially specialized treatment like DBT, works much the same way  yet we often struggle to see it through the same lens.

Full Model DBT reflects the cost, the depth, structure , and accountability built into our treatment program.

DBT Is a Program — Not a Single Session

Full-model DBT includes multiple coordinated components designed to support safety, skill development, and long-term behavioral change:

Ongoing suicide risk assessment and safety planning

Continuous monitoring to ensure adherence to the DBT model

When a client enrolls in DBT therapy on Long Island or in New York City, they are not paying for a single visit. They are securing access to a structured, evidence-based system of care designed for individuals with complex and high-risk needs.

Our clinicians provide phone coaching outside of session hours when clients need help using their skills in real-life moments. There is no additional fee attached to this support  it is built into the treatment model because it is a vital part of how DBT helps people create change where it matters most.

Our commitment is to our clients and to the integrity of this treatment. The structure, availability, and support built into DBT are not extras they are essential components of care, and we stand behind providing them fully and responsibly.

Why DBT Therapy costs more - we work as a team

Why Adherent DBT Requires a Full Treatment Team

Ethical, effective DBT cannot be delivered by a therapist working in isolation.

Every DBT clinician at Suffolk DBT participates in a weekly consultation team. This team-based structure is a core requirement of adherent DBT and ensures treatment remains consistent, effective, and safe for clients across Long Island and New York City.

This approach:

Improves client safety

Reduces therapy dropout

Supports clinician effectiveness

Maintains fidelity to evidence-based DBT standards

These systems require time, staffing, and infrastructure—factors that directly influence the cost of comprehensive DBT care.

Our Investment in Highly Trained DBT Clinicians

High-quality DBT care depends on clinicians who are deeply trained, consistently supervised, and fully supported.

At Suffolk DBT, our clinicians are employees who receive the benefits of our long-term investment in their professional growth. We are committed to building careers  not just caseloads  within a practice that values integrity, ongoing learning, and true fidelity to the DBT model.

As a specialized DBT practice serving Long Island and New York City, we make substantial and ongoing investments in advanced clinician education through both in-house training and Behavioral Tech, the institute founded by Marsha Linehan, PhD, developer of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

This ensures our work remains closely aligned with the original, evidence-based DBT model and delivered with the depth, structure, and clinical expertise that comprehensive DBT requires.

All clinicians are closely supervised and supported by a full DBT consultation team, ensuring ethical, high-quality care aligned with best-practice standards.

Our Commitment to Access on Long Island and in NYC

We recognize that mental health care costs can create real barriers. Access matters.

To support individuals and families throughout Long Island and New York City, we offer multiple pathways to DBT care:

A Dialectical Truth About DBT Costs

There is also a dialectical truth at the heart of our values as a practice. We believe deeply in making mental health care more accessible, and we also believe that DBT only works when it is delivered as it was designed  comprehensive, structured, and adherent to the full model.

At Suffolk DBT, we cannot ethically water down treatment, reduce key components, or offer only pieces of DBT simply to lower costs. We truly wish the systems surrounding mental health care made it possible for more people to access this level of treatment more easily. At the same time, our responsibility is to provide DBT with integrity, depth, and fidelity so that the care people receive here is the care that research shows works.

Our commitment is to deliver full-model DBT with the training, consultation, and clinical support this treatment requires — because clients deserve care that is thorough, evidence-based, and built to create meaningful, lasting change.
