You shouldn’t have to live near a major city to access specialized DBT care. We are a New York based specialty DBT practice providing structured, full-model Dialectical Behavior Therapy to individuals and families throughout Upstate New York via secure telehealth.
Access to structured, evidence-based mental health care can be limited outside major metropolitan areas. Many people living in Upstate New York face long travel times, fewer specialty mental health providers, and limited access to comprehensive DBT programs.
Through telehealth, Suffolk DBT helps bridge that gap. Our program delivers full-model DBT Therapy in upstate NY : including individual therapy, skills group training, and between-session support directly to clients in their homes, while maintaining the structure and accountability that make DBT effective.
You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, intense emotions, impulsive behaviors, relationship problems, substance use, or simply feeling stuck and hopeless.
Sometimes the behaviors that help you get through a difficult moment like avoiding, shutting down, lashing out, using substances, or hurting yourself are creating even more problems over time.
DBT helps you understand these patterns and learn practical skills to manage emotions, tolerate distress, improve relationships, and make choices that move you toward the life you want.
You do not need to have a specific diagnosis to benefit from DBT. We work with adolescents, college students, adults, and families throughout Upstate New York who are struggling with a wide range of emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Whether you’re looking for DBT therapy for children, teens, adults, or families, our specialized DBT Therapists provide compassionate, evidence-based treatment tailored to every stage of life.
No matter how challenges show up on the outside, many people are carrying powerful emotions on the inside.
DBT helps them learn new ways to respond with skills to create greater stability, confidence, and connection.
Weekly individual DBT sessions focused on reducing problem behaviors and building skills
Structured DBT skills groups where clients learn and practice skills
Real-time between session calls to help clients apply DBT skills in daily life
The DBT diary card is a core tool used throughout treatment. Clients track emotions, urges, behaviors, and skills each day, helping both the client and therapist notice patterns over time.
Diary cards guide sessions, support risk monitoring, and help turn insight into real-world change.
Our therapists work closely together as a DBT consultation team because we truly care about providing thoughtful, consistent, and high-quality care. Each client is supported by an entire team behind the scenes, not just one therapist, so no one is navigating this work alone. Even when you may live upstate we are treating you as if you lived nearby. Nothing changes in terms of our commitment and the care you are given.
While we do not have physical offices in every Upstate location, we regularly work with clients throughout the region via Telehealth to provide DBT Therapy in Upstate NY including:
Many families we work with have teens who leave home to attend college in Upstate New York. While this transition can be exciting, it can also increase emotional stress especially for students who already struggle with intense emotions, impulsivity, anxiety, depression, or self-harm urges.
Moving away from home often means adjusting to academic pressure, new social environments, and independence for the first time. Campus counseling centers can be helpful, but some students need more structured or specialized care than short-term services can provide. We are able to provide DBT Therapy in Upstate NY that is the same model we provide for our in person clients.
For parents, knowing their child can remain connected to a structured DBT program often brings
relief during the shift to college life. Telehealth allows continuity of care even when students are
living hours away.
For some individuals, in-person treatment or more intensive services may be necessary. When that happens, we help guide families toward appropriate local resources and coordinate next steps when possible.
Our DBT Therapists are trained to assess suicide risk using evidence-based approaches, including CAMS and LRAMP. We also work with clients to support safety in their everyday environments.
Clients complete daily diary cards that include tracking high-risk behaviors, and we provide phone coaching to help them use skills during difficult moments.
If a higher level of care is needed, we will recommend and help support that transition. Our goal is always to make sure each person receives the level of care that best fits their needs.
Suffolk DBT’s commitment to serving Upstate New York is also deeply personal. I grew up in St. Lawrence County, attended SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Cobleskill, and saw firsthand how limited access to specialized mental health care can be in rural communities.
Later, as a parent, I watched my own children attend college at SUNY Geneseo and University at Albany (SUNY), and I understood even more clearly how important it is for students and families to have access to structured, evidence-based support when they are far from home.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy can be life-changing when delivered as a full, adherent model. While modified or “watered-down” versions of DBT can serve a purpose when options are limited, many individuals and families need the structure, accountability, and comprehensive approach that full-model DBT provides.
As the founder of Suffolk DBT, I felt it was important to extend that level of care to the kinds of communities where I grew up places where people are strong, resourceful, and deeply connected, but where access to specialty treatment has historically been limited. Telehealth
allows us to bring a piece of that care back to the heart of Upstate New York.
Whether you live in a rural town, small city, or college community, specialized DBT treatment is
still available. Telehealth makes it possible to receive structured, evidence-based care without leaving your home region.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is all about meeting you where you are. We believe in creating a safe space filled with compassion and understanding. Our therapists and staff are dedicated to providing an online- environment so that you can thrive. We are a small practice of about 10 DBT therapists who live in New York and together our team will provide comprehensive care no matter where you live in New York State.
