Challenges LGBTQ+ Clients May Face

LGBTQ+ individuals often carry stress that others may not see. Experiences of rejection, stigma, or invalidation can deeply affect emotional health, relationships, and self-esteem.

Many clients come to therapy struggling with:

• anxiety, depression, or emotional overwhelm
• shame or identity-related stress
• relationship or family conflict
self-harm urges or impulsive behaviors
• trauma responses or chronic invalidation
• feeling disconnected from themselves

DBT helps reduce emotional suffering while building resilience, stability, and a stronger sense of self.

What Is LGBTQ+ Affirming DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment that teaches skills for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

At Suffolk DBT, we deliver DBT with fidelity to the model in a therapeutic environment that is respectful, affirming, and grounded in your lived experience.

This approach recognizes that distress can be intensified by:

• discrimination, rejection, or misunderstanding
• social pressure or identity-related stress
• relationship and family strain
• fear of being invalidated or unsafe

Our goal is not only to help you feel better but to help you build skills that support a life that feels stable, authentic, and worth living.

How Treatment Is Structured

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive program offered through in-person DBT therapy or telehealth, designed to support meaningful change both inside and outside of therapy sessions. Diary cards are an important tool used in DBT as well as our practice having a consultation team.

In weekly sessions, you and your therapist review your diary card together and focus on the goals that matter most to you building a life that feels more stable, meaningful, and worth living.

The diary card helps you become more aware of your emotions, urges, and behaviors, especially the patterns that may be getting in the way of the life you want.
DBT Skills Group at Suffolk DBT is more like a class than traditional group therapy. We begin with a brief mindfulness practice to help everyone slow down and focus.

Then we review homework — how you practiced your skills during the week and introduce new tools to help you manage emotions, relationships, and stressful situations. The focus isn’t on rehashing problems it’s on building solutions and learning practical ways to handle challenges more effectively.
Emotional moments don’t wait for your next session. Phone coaching gives you brief support to help you use your DBT skills in real time, when emotions are high and it’s hardest to think clearly.

The goal isn’t to provide therapy over the phone, but to help you practice responding in skillful ways so you can handle challenges with more confidence and control.

Support for Families and Caregivers

Many LGBTQ+ clients are doing the hard work of building a life worth living while also living in environments that feel invalidating — where they may be misunderstood, criticized, or rejected. Our optional Family Component for adults helps caregivers learn how to reduce invalidation cycles and build a more supportive home environment.  Our teen program incorporates the family.

We don’t shame families.  We help them develop the skills to communicate with respect, stay connected during hard conversations, and learn to love and support the person in front of them  not the version they expected.
