At Suffolk DBT, in-person Dialectical Behavior Therapy takes place in a structured, supportive office setting with therapists who are fully present and engaged. Clients learn practical skills to manage emotions, strengthen relationships, and build a life worth living. This page explains what in-person DBT Therapy looks like and what to expect from treatment.
In-person DBT therapy offers unique benefits over online-only programs.
Our clients experience:
•Immediate emotional support from trained therapists
•Skills practice in real-world interactions
•Stronger accountability and engagement
•A safe, private space for difficult conversations
Our approach combines individual therapy, weekly DBT skills groups, and family sessions to create a comprehensive, real-life DBT experience. Clients benefit from:
• Structured weekly sessions tailored to their individual needs
• Practical skills to build mindfulness, manage distress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships
• Support between sessions when appropriate, helping reduce crises and hospital visits
• Thoughtful treatment planning based on assessment, including specialized approaches when needed
This approach helps clients actively use DBT skills in everyday life — not just talk about them in session.
In our in-person DBT programs, clients participate in all core components of comprehensive DBT treatment.
Clients meet one-on-one with a therapist in person, allowing for immediate feedback, real-time connection, and hands-on practice of DBT skills. Clients will be utilizing diary cards, have skills coaching available between sessions
Learning DBT skills in an in-person group provides interaction, shared experiences, and supportive feedback you can’t get online. Our groups have homework and practice learning the skills in group and outside of group sessions.
Families practice DBT strategies together with guidance from a Group Leader and co-leader building stronger communication and connection in real life. Whether it is parent management training, multi- family skills group, or family sessions they all allow for that connection of an in person meeting.
The DBT diary card is a core tool used throughout treatment. Clients track emotions, urges, behaviors, and skills each day, helping both the client and therapist notice patterns over time.
Diary cards guide sessions, support risk monitoring, and help turn insight into real-world change.

Family members of our adolescent clients are encouraged to attend multi-family skills groups, learning the same DBT strategies their loved one is using, and how to reinforce those skills at home.
Phone coaching is available between sessions to help clients maintain their skills and prevent escalation in real-world settings. Our Long Island therapists also receive weekly consultation to ensure that every client gets the highest quality care.
During your initial call, you’ll share concerns and history. Intake paperwork is completed in advance, allowing the clinician to focus on key insights during the first meeting. DBT treatment programs are tailored to each person’s unique needs & developmental stage:
We provide comprehensive, in-person DBT for adolescents and children, tailored to developmental needs. Treatment may include individual therapy, skills groups, caregiver involvement, and family skills training. Our clinicians work closely with parents and caregivers to reinforce DBT skills home and support long-term progress.
Adult DBT treatment includes individual therapy, in-person DBT skills groups, and phone coaching to support skill use between sessions. Treatment focuses on helping adults manage intense emotions, reduce impulsive or self-destructive behaviors, improve relationships, and build a life that feels more stable and meaningful. Skills are practiced in real-world situations, with ongoing support from a trained DBT treatment team.
During the intake session, the individual and, when appropriate, family members are involved in a thorough assessment of history, current concerns, and treatment goals. This process helps match each client with the therapist and DBT program best suited to their needs.
After intake, clients begin treatment with a licensed DBT therapist who is fully trained in comprehensive, adherent DBT.
