DBT Therapy for Adults on Long Island and NYC

When Life Feels Emotionally Unmanageable, You’re Not Alone

When your reactions feel bigger than the situation, daily life can start to feel exhausting. You may find yourself getting overwhelmed easily, reacting in ways you later regret, struggling with relationship conflict, or swinging between shutting down emotionally and feeling everything too intensely.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy helps adults slow these patterns down, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and build practical skills to respond more effectively in everyday life.

Your Reactions Make Sense Even If They’re Hurting You

Many adults who start Dialectical Behavior Therapy have spent years feeling judged, misunderstood, or told they’re “too sensitive.” In DBT, we recognize that some people are born with a higher level of emotional sensitivity.

Feelings can come on faster, feel stronger, and take longer to settle. That intensity is real — even if others don’t understand it.

The ways you’ve tried to manage those emotions may have been the best options you had at the time. But if those coping patterns are now creating more pain, you deserve support in learning new ones.

DBT offers both understanding and practical tools for change — because you deserve relief, not just insight

How DBT at Suffolk DBT is Different

DBT here isn’t just about talking through feelings.
We work with you to understand why the same patterns keep happening and how to change them. Our DBT Therapy Groups allow you to connect and learn practical life changing skills.

Your DBT therapist is not just a listener. They are highly trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and help you step back and see the full picture:

Your emotions, your thoughts, your urges, your behaviors, your relationships, and how you’re managing day-to-day life at work, school, and home.

Understanding the Patterns Behind Your Reactions

We help you identify the patterns, vulnerabilities, and triggers that shape how you respond to stress, conflict, and difficult situations.

What Adult DBT Treatment Looks Like

DBT is a comprehensive treatment program designed to support meaningful change both inside and outside of therapy sessions through structured individual therapy, DBT skills group, and phone coaching support.

Receiving phone coaching when experiencing intense emotions.

Each week, you and your therapist use your diary card to guide treatment and focus on the goals most important to you creating a life that feels steadier, more fulfilling, and aligned with your values.

Tracking your week helps uncover recurring patterns in how you respond to stress, internal distress, and difficult situations so therapy can target what is truly getting in the way.

DBT Skills Group at Suffolk DBT is more like a class than traditional group therapy. We begin with a brief mindfulness practice to help everyone slow down and focus.

Then we review homework ,how you practiced your skills during the week and introduce new tools to help you manage emotions, relationships, and stressful situations.

The focus isn’t on rehashing problems it’s on building solutions and learning practical ways to handle challenges more effectively.

Life’s most difficult moments don’t wait for your next session. Phone coaching gives you brief support to help you use your DBT skills in real time, when feelings are strong  and it’s hardest to think clearly.

The goal is not therapy over the phone—it’s practical coaching to help you navigate difficult moments more effectively, make choices you feel proud of, and build confidence in your ability to handle challenges.

Your DBT Diary Card is a simple daily tracking tool. It helps you notice emotions, urges, behaviors, and skills you used, so therapy focuses on what’s actually happening in your life – not just what you remember in the moment. you and your therapist use it during sessions to stay organized and focus on what matters most each week.

Behavioral Chain Analysis

When reviewing your dairy card, we identify a behavior that needs to be looked at more closely. Then we slow it down and look at each step in the DBT Behavioral Chain – what led up to it, what you felt, what you did, and where skills could have helped. This turns painful or confusing moments into learning instead of shame. We often complete the DBT Chain Analyses together in session, and sometimes you may be asked to jot one down soon after a behavior happens so the details are easier to remember.

The Four Skill Areas you Will Learn in DBT

Mindfulness helps you slow down, stay present, and respond thoughtfully instead of reacting automatically. You learn to notice your thoughts, emotions, and urges without getting swept up in them or acting impulsively.

Distress tolerance helps you get through difficult moments without making things worse. You build practical tools to tolerate pain safely and break patterns that keep you stuck.

Interpersonal effectiveness helps you improve relationships by learning how to ask for what you need, set boundaries, and maintain self-respect while staying connected to others.

Emotion regulation helps you understand how emotions work, reduce emotional vulnerability, and respond more effectively when feelings become intense. You learn how to change emotional patterns that are no longer serving you.

Our therapists are supported by a DBT consultation team to provide high-quality, structured care “You are not expected to figure this out alone”
